Save the Saint Lucia Pitons

The petition will be delivered to St Lucian PM

Dear Pitons lovers !

The Save the Pitons petition will be delivered to the Prime Minister office Friday 12th February at 2h30.

A delegation of SLNT members will present it - in hard copy (we know this is not environment friendly...) - to him for immediate action.

Copies will be sent to Ministers concerned by the question:

Minister of Physical Planning,
Minister of Education,
Minister of Tourism,
and Harold Dalson (Parliamentary Rep. for Soufriere).

The date line is passed already and the St Lucian population is not informed about what happen with UNESCO discussion ?

We need immediate action to protect the Pitons from construction of any kind and real estate projects.

The population of Saint Lucia and the press is invited to attend the event.

The petition Save the pitons has 1200 signatures... plus at least 400 on hard copies.
Lets circulate it till the 15th of December, we will send it to the Prime Minister.

We know that some people find this a small action compare to the problem.
Still at least let's start with something so we cannot say I didn't say nothing.

Merry Christmas and happy new year to all and specially to our Pitons who will escape from greed and destruction and continue to dominate with grace the deep blue see.

We have a good article in the Star this week and the Petition was boosted !!

The Pitons Management Area which encompasses the Pitons and the Sulphur Springs was recognized by UNESCO as having Outstanding Universal Value and bestowed the privilege of World Heritage Site status. If we did not know the value of OUR LAND then, we are surely finding out now.
OUR LAND including CROWN lands is prime real estate that is being sold to foreign developers to build hotels that desecrate and pollute OUR LAND and OUR SEA for a few dollars.
OUR LAND, our heritage, our patrimony is being sold by government with no consideration for OUR PEOPLE all in the name of development and the crass excuse that "jobs will be provided". I am in favor of sustainable development, but when my RIGHT to beach access is denied, and archaelogical sites are ravaged by machines, where is the sustainability? What legacy are we prepared to leave for our children?
We are at the tipping point!
St Lucians, it is OUR fault that we are in this mess because we sit back and do nothing. What price are we willing to pay for development, primarily touristic development (which by the way is a public purpose according to a private land acquisiton notice in the St. Lucian Gazette)?
NOW we must demand accountability from the political directorate and our pound of flesh.

91 members signed the Save the Pitons ! petition letter to the Prime Minister.

On the surface it is just two beautiful peaks of rocks, jutting out of the sea, covered in vegetation, which draws more oohs and aahs from visitors than from locals. However the much lauded, celebrated PitonsManagement Area, the one place that Christopher Reeves in Superman 2 had to come to find the perfect flower for Lois Lane, has at least 250 species of plants, many of them found only or mainly there.
There are also eight rare species of tree, one found only on the summit of Petit Piton.
Additionally twenty-seven bird species have been recorded on Gros Piton as well as five endemic birds, three rodents, the indigenous opossum, three species of bat, eight reptiles and numerous butterflies make the Pitons their home.

The surrounding waters are just as impressive—with the coral reefs being described as healthy and diverse, comprising of fringing and patch reefs. Down below, there are 168 species of finfish, a variety of corals, molluscs and eight annelid worms. Hawksbill turtles are seen inshore whilst whale sharks and pilot whales splurge offshore.

This must have been the sort of thing that inspired singer India Arie when she visited here. After jumping into the waters in Soufriere in the buff, she later recorded “God is real” ... read the article.

We can monitor what is happening in the protected area of the Pitons by Google earth. You download the software, you go to Saint Lucia and you obtain a very precise view of the Pitons.
Check all houses builded and roads...
